SXSW 2010 Redux

Photo by KK A week ago we bid farewell to thousands of our closest friends who joined us in Austin for SXSW Interactive. While we met a plethora of active users during the remarkable event, we were overjoyed to welcome an even larger group who had never used Gowalla before. In fact, almost 50,000 new Gowalla passports were created around the world by folks who picked up on the buzz surrounding SXSW. There’s a deep dive on some of our SXSW-related statistics that we’re looking forward to sharing with the world sometime soon, but until then we have a few bullet points for you. These statistics are pulled from just over 5,800 people who stamped their passport over 135,000 times at spots and events around downtown Austin starting Thursday, March 11 and running through Sunday, March 21.

The Tiki Room with Diplo

Additionally, we would be remiss if we didn’t thank Diplo, LIVESTRONG and Sweet Leaf Tea for making the Tiki Room an event to remember. Extra props to Diplo for continuing to spin despite the rain. Those who stayed out in the drink to hear the pulsing sound have some memories to last a lifetime. Friend of Gowalla, Kris Krug, has posted a great batch of photos from the event. A remarkable 594 people checked in at The Tiki Room. A donation to LIVESTRONG will be made on your behalf. Thank you for joining us to beat cancer. Our friend Saphrin also set the world record for most LIVESTRONG wristbands on a person (77!), a feat the fine fellows at URDB assure us won’t be broken anytime soon (Pro Tip: DO NOT try this at home). Finally, we’d love to thank @Chevrolet—who partnered with us to do some crazy things like give rides to randomly selected folks who checked in at the airport—as well as our other friends at Palm, Lomography, IFC, Adobe, Facebook, Fantastic Fest, SAG and ONETaco. You all made SXSW awesome for thousands of people. See you all in 2011!
